A site selling e-store solutions to both corporate clients and individuals.

Requirements from client are as follows:

Must Be VIBRANT COLORS, apple sleek and cool style. Fast Loading.

In essence, they wanted a site that would appeal to everyone. The site had to be easy to use/navigate, and the information had to be easily available.

Utilizing banners for the left and right column help generate additional interest in the product though I had to be careful not to make them seem like hosted banner ads.

Hi, I’m John.

I graduated from Nanyang Polytechnic with a diploma in Digital Media Design.

I lead an ‘interest’ filled life. A lot of things/activities interest me.
You could say I have long term A.D.D.

I have been, and am still working in the creative industry for the past 2 years.
I’m a web designer/producer by profession. My job scope includes conceptualizing and designing of websites, as well as site integration on both html and CMS platforms.

My drive to work(create) is music whilst my inspiration is fed from supermarkets. :-) Both literally and figuratively. Product design is a very beautiful aspect of design as it has the ability to convey and incite more feelings from the consumer. Color(graphics), shape, size, texture and even the sound! Currently, I’m in love with tinned anchovies. :-) Especially the ones from Japanese markets.

Om Republic

Om Republic is another e-store design. Their main product line features sports/yoga apparel for women.

For this design, I wanted to create an open, zen-like concept. To prevent the white space from becoming too overpowering and bland, I created a diffused background from a picture of a sunset through a mist, which gives it a warm feel and helps to keep the white space in check.

The monochrome flower at the bottom left helps to anchor the design and create a visual focus and flow while contributing to the zen + natural(as stated in their slogan) feel.

Babies Culture

Babies Culture required an e-store for their wide range of baby products.

Based on their logo design, I decided to use illustrations/vectors to create a cute and adorable feel for the site in hope that parents will go “Aww” and get a warm fuzzy.

Through this design, I also hoped to play up the natural/(non-synthetic materials) aspect of their products. Whilst the majority of the background could have been set as the sky, I chose the brown earth in order to have the motifs stand out, as well as reducing the ‘glare’ of a white on blue background.

Caring Teacher Awards

This was a design I did for Caring Teacher Awards. As stated on the mockup, it is held once every two years to commend teachers who have made a difference in the lives of their students.

As the site’s primary audience are students from Primary to Junior College level, I decided to do a montage style design that was fun and quirky; qualities that I believe would appeal to them.

The font choice was an attempt at indirect suggestion. Comic book fans might recognize the font, one that is prevalent in Marvel/DC comics. With that choice, I am attempting to portray teachers as heroes/heroines, which, through their efforts at educating the young, rightfully are.

The Oslo Castaways

A website for my (ex)band, The Oslo Castaways. My second foray into squiggly-lined happiness.

This concept sprung up from the wall plug gramophone that came from a project which didn’t quite make it. It’s a museum theme and I had fun illustrating the picture frames.

I had a friend flash it up for me, for which I am eternally grateful. Thanks Sheryl :)

SMILE was a new event hosted by Home Club down at Upper Circular Road. I had a friend who was working there and they wanted a site to showcase/highlight the up and coming acts and events they were bringing in.

A foray into foreign territory, this was a project that was really enjoyable as I could literally break free (no design brief again) and just doodle away on my electronic canvas. The home logo was from a photo of an actual lightbox they had but it was removed from the final version due to marketing issues. Characters were drawn up to reflect the diversity of the crowd that frequent HOME club.

In a sense, this project was like a catharsis in that I sought to abandon the socially accepted design principles, and tried to emulate the bravery and creativity of a young mind that would go ahead with reckless abandon.

Escape the Apostrophe

Geek humour based poster. Created this for a site a friend and I are
contributing to.

To quote from (most javascript resources):

In Javascript, an apostrophe (single quote) into a string itself enclosed by apostrophes cause an error.

To troubleshoot, you should escape the apostrophe by heading the backslash character to get to the Javascript interpreter that it is an apostrophe within the string.

When I was designing the poster, I realized that my mind kept auto-correcting “Escape the apostrophe” to “Escape the catastrophe“.

It might have been all the hollywood movies, but it hit me that not escaping your apostrophes also leads to a less than desirable result(catastrophe). Hence, I set forth on trying to influence people’s minds into interpreting the message as I had, in trying to make their mind auto-correct. And thus, when they are feeling smug about figuring out the underlying meaning, the message gets driven home as well.

i-Am Scripted

A friend of mine required a website and posters done for a school project in which they had to come up with an art exhibition as well as a photography competition. Being the good friend that I was, i agreed to this based on the promise of payment (if there was surplus) and the allure of being able to use this in my portfolio, which, contrary to my sarcasm, is.

With no specific art direction, I decided to try a typographical approach, in which I am always a fan of. I “sold out” to the Typography Devil by using the ever popular Helvetica for its handsome good looks and the rest of the process was focused on the layout. Being very-slightly OCD helped. I had a lot of fun doing this poster despite later inclusions of sponsor logos.

The Oslo Castaways

The Oslo Castaways needed an e-flyer to post on MySpace for a
series of gigs they were playing.

I hit upon the idea after seeing the clock on a friend’s mac. The information (text) is clear and concise with no excess ‘fat’ and they’re attention grabbing due to the contrast and typographical nature which, helps to convey the message fast given the nature of the media.

To quote ‘Yes Man’: “It’s like a friggin’ mind grenade!”
